2021: A Year Review

2021 is a special year for the company, marking our 40 year anniversary in business. We are so grateful for the support and love from the Central Florida area and continue to challenge ourselves with new designs and floral artistry.

We comprised a collection to share a few special moments from 2021 to celebrate our many reasons to be thankful this year to include: collaboration with talented vendors, our wonderful clients, and the opportunity of creating new custom structures.

Our one-of-a-kind wisteria chandelier is undoubtedly a Fairbanks Florist’s statement piece. In 2021 we made the debut of many other grand hanging floral installments among several other custom structures - designed for each individual vision. It is so fulfilling and exciting to create something so special and specific for our clients!

Maddie and David’s Fun and Fabulous Love

Maddie and David’s wedding was illuminated with the couple’s effervescent love and laughter, perfectly curated to their fun and heartfelt relationship. Favorite features include the bride’s sparkly boots signed by her bridesmaids, the couple’s private exchange of gifts before the ceremony, dozens of the family’s chinoiserie vases, and a perfect sunset moment.

Maddie’s shoes made a big statement - a unique way to show off her personality, while providing sentimental support!

A day full of emotion counting down to see one another offers a special opportunity to privately share a thoughtful memento. Love letters and gifts can be sweet and romantic, or silly and light hearted to calm each other’s nerves.

Roses and smilax greenery adorned the pergola creating this gorgeous back drop at The Cypress Grove Estate House. As the ceremony began, the couple was greeted by sunshine and bright florals at the aisle entrance.

The reception space was filled with beautiful blooms in various chinoiserie vessels. Each guest table had different vases and flower combinations. A structured garden floral design added dimension and texture using a wide variety of flowers and greenery to include: roses, tulips, anemones, dark blue delphinium, mini green hydrangeas, Queen Anne’s lace, stock, scabiosa, hellebores, hyacinth, and iris. An assortment of crystal candlesticks and candleholders were added to the tables and surrounding area for elevated style.

Candles and decor are a great way to compliment the floral arrangements. At Fairbanks Florist, we offer a wide selection of gorgeous decor available to rent to achieve your wedding “look”.

We love Maddie’s repurposed bridal bouquet used in the rental furniture to create this lovely cake area!

Roses and Elegance: Jennifer and Andrew’s Classic Garden Wedding

Jennifer and Andrew’s wedding had a regal, yet traditional theme. Classic elegance! The floral designs were structured for a sculpted garden feeling with texture and dimension between the flowers. This style was especially symbolic of their love story - as their engagement began with a proposal taking place by a beautiful fountain in the middle of a rose garden!

It warms our hearts to include these meaningful details, making each wedding unique and individual to the couple. Jennifer and Andrew’s wedding had several important sentiments including: Jennifer’s Grandmother’s dress lace wrapped around her bouquet, the cake knife from Jennifer’s parent’s wedding, and the Reception’s foyer display of family photos.

The day began at the extravagant St. George Orthodox Church where the couple shared a traditional service and the promise of marriage. Jennifer carried a structured, round bouquet wrapped in her Grandmother’s lace, using a mix of white and light pink roses, white ranunculus, with pops of greenery.

Officially Mr. and Mrs. Giarard, the celebration continued at The Country Club of Orlando. The reception space was adorned with beautiful decor including speciality linens and an assortment of candle embellishments. A garden display on the fireplace mantel and large floral arrangement with family photos in the entry way greeted guests as the entered. Round guest tables consisted of a mixture of tall floral arrangements paired with low compote floral arrangements. The beautiful garden florals used classic and spray roses, hydrangea, among mixed foliages creating airy dimension and texture.

As they continue their journey, Jennifer and Andrew start their lives together in a new city with new jobs, where they’re surely destined to find a beautiful rose garden to reminisce on their special love.

Classic Casa Feliz Wedding Celebration - Winter Park, FL - November 7, 2020

Featuring Allie Harvard & Corbin Harris

Allie & Corbin’s November wedding was held at the magnificent Spanish style historic museum, Casa Feliz. “Casa Feliz'' translates to “Happy House,” and this couple’s wedding encompassed just that. Their whimsical wedding was filled with joy and love at every moment.

The bride’s gown was truly one of a kind! She found the dress in bright red at Bridal Gallery of Orlando. The dress was custom designed for her in white. It was so very “Allie” and for added personality: sparkly Kate Spade tennis shoes!

One of my favorite moments of the entire wedding was the precious first look shared by Allie & her father. This heartfelt reunion was full of laughter, tears, and an abundance of love.

So often when planning a wedding, big decision making is left to the bride. If the brides happy, the groom’s happy. With Allie and Corbin, the groom had 2 requests: first - a steak for dinner, and second - to cover the colored railing on the balcony. Lana made this request effortless by draping smilax - covering the railing while creating a beautiful ceremony backdrop.

You’ve heard the old adage - “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.” While blue flowers are a unique wedding request, they just so happened to be the bride’s favorite color! We incorporated blue tones into the décor and achieved her floral style by adding light blue tweedia, dark navy centered anemones, and cool toned greenery. The outcome was both stunning and classy!

The floral chandelier was the show stopper of the reception. During the bride & groom portraits, the bride stopped everyone to admire it!

The beautiful couple was all smiles as the celebration continued well into the night. Guests enjoyed the traditional first dance, father/daughter dance, dinner, dancing, and of course - cake!

The love Allie & Corbin have for one another was so evident in all of their interactions. We know they will build their very own Casa Feliz (happy home) as newlyweds!

Ashley & Lewis exchanged vows before an intimate gathering of their friends and family at the beautiful Alfond Inn in Winter Park, FL. A sophisticated palette of blush and white set the scene for an elegant and romantic celebration. Bride Ashley was positively glowing in a brilliant satin and lace gown with a matching chapel length lace veil.

The ceremony was held in the conservatory of the Alfond Inn. Pedestals of overflowing blush and white floral arrangements paired beautifully with the floating candles and white rose petals that flanked the aisle. A heartfelt exchange of vows before their closest friends and family was sealed with a sweet kiss!

The reception space was simply stunning! The tables were styled with a mixture of high and low rose and hydrangea centerpieces. Towering above guests were stunning arrangements in glass vases with greenery cascading down. An assortment of beautiful candles created an ambiance of warmth and whimsy.

The evening concluded with toasting, dinner, dancing, and cake. Every element of their beautiful celebration was thoughtfully curated and perfectly executed. Lewis & Ashley’s intimate wedding is a wonderful reminder that a small wedding does not mean you have to sacrifice on style or sophistication.

From the moment I spoke to wedding planner, Traci Marini of Eventfully Yours, I began to envision the luxurious and swoon-worthy floral arrangements that I would be creating to bring Lauren & Bobby’s wedding day vision to life! Their romantic Jewish wedding took place on a picture perfect, crisp fall day. The ceremony was held on the rooftop of the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center with the reception following in the elegant DeVos ballroom.

Lauren fell in love with the gorgeous phalaenopsis orchids, so we made them the focal point of our floral design. The white butterfly-like cascading blooms draped flawlessly creating an ethereal feel, and her bridesmaid’s more understated rose & hydrangea bouquets were a perfect complement.

For their romantic rooftop ceremony and reception we paired the phalaenopsis orchids with hydrangeas and quicksand roses in blush and satin. This elegant trio adorned the floral bar across the acrylic ceremony Chuppah. Continuing the bride’s vision inside the reception space, we created this stunning hanging floral chandelier over the dance floor. Both sites were classic & breathtaking.

Following their rooftop ceremony, the beautiful bride stole the spotlight as she glowed beneath the candlelight reflection of the crystal mirrored candle holders. The gorgeous florals completed the vision of Traci, Lauren, and mother-of-the-bride, Happy.

I always try to make my client's dollar stretch, so we repurposed the floral bar from the Chuppah in the center of the head table following the ceremony. Re-purposing arrangements in new spaces allows us to breathe fresh life into a floral design and is a great way to get the most out of your budget (plus your guests will be none the wiser!)

I was honored to have been part of seeing the new Mr. and Mrs. Sunner’s wedding day vision come to fruition. The floral arrangements added the perfect touch of timeless elegance and set the backdrop for a picture perfect celebration.

The Perfect Piece: EllieClaire and Scott’s Summer Soiree

Sometimes, the most meaningful weddings are those that have elements that come from the heart. And none was more special than EllieClaire (a wedding photographer!) and Scott’s July wedding at St. Lukes Lutheran Church and Interlachen Country Club in which EllieClaire’s mother, Madeline, gave her talent and love to the couple’s special day.

Madeline, the mother of the bride, owns her own pottery company, “Mad Made Pottery” (an adorable play on her name!). For the wedding, she created specially made pieces that brought a beautifully organic feel to the day and Lana loved creating floral that would be showcased in these vessels.

Not only did they grace the tables for centerpieces and were used as unique container for cocktail tables, but the head table boasted a handmade vase for each bridesmaid to display her bouquet which was then given to each of them as a gift.

The bouquets and arrangements used a plethora of delicate garden botanicals that was simply stunning! The blend featured: white veronica, quicksand roses, blue delphinium and blue thistle, dusty miller, white peonies, white lisianthus, white ranunculus, Queen Anne’s lace, white majolica spray roses, white O’Hara garden roses, Italian ruscus and seeded eucalyptus - what a fabulous fusion!

The color scheme was a graceful combination of white, cream, soft pastels, and greens with subtle pops of purple - perfect for a mid-summer soiree.

Lana was privileged to work with Madeline on EllieClaire and Scott’s delightful day. And she will always remember the skill and affection that went into it as she enjoys the beautiful owl vase and footed compote she received as a thank you!

You may feel your emotions are a roller coaster and it’s no wonder. This momentous time in your life is supposed to be exciting and special and now it can feel like things are spinning out of control.

“Planning a wedding is already an emotional time, but now we are adding fear, fallen dreams and hopes, and it’s exacerbating the situation,” says Lana.

But we want you to know, it is human to feel this way and that Fairbanks Florist, and so much of the wedding industry, understand and are here for you as you rework your plans.

Your wedding or event may not look exactly the same as it did in your mind a month ago, but that doesn’t mean it still can’t be the most memorable day of your lives.

Here is what Lana is currently experiencing:

Cancellations

Most vendors that Lana works with and has talked to are simply rescheduling their services for a new date. Deposits are being kept and used for the future wedding or event as they are non-refundable - just as they are with Fairbanks Florist.

Force Majeure?

At this time, we are seeing that most wedding and business insurance are not recognizing COVID-19 as a force majeure (an act that is unforeseen and may not allow someone to fulfill a contract). This is for both the client and the business.

Now, this stance may change but at the current moment the coronavirus is not a reason for insurance to cover repercussions.

Signing Future Contracts

Signing a contract for a new date or vendor may seem scary right now. However, signing a contract is important to still do.

Why?

It protects both you and your vendor. It secures your date and pricing as well as keeps the vendor responsible for their services. At the same time, it serves as an agreement that you will follow through on your commitment to use their services. It’s a win-win for both parties and should be taken seriously.

Rescheduling

When it comes to rescheduling, one thing to note is that changing your event to a future date is eliminating the possibility of a new booking coming in for a vendor (which is part of their business loss). For some vendors, there may be a rescheduling fee (for example, some businesses that may have a variety of weddings on one weekend). Some of these businesses are reducing this rescheduling fee, some are waiving it right now, and some are still keeping it in place. Make sure you ask your vendors about any rescheduling fee.

Fairbanks Florist is not charging a fee for invested time.

In addition, as most weddings and events are rescheduling, many couples are feeling the stress of having to figure out dates and times that all vendors and the venue are available for - I have consoled many upset brides and parents recently and for good reason.

This is where we are seeing an increased need for a wedding planners.

Wedding planners are now taking on the responsibility of contacting all vendors and venues, renegotiating contracts, and presenting new possibilities for clients. This, in and of itself, shows the significant value wedding planners provide.

A LETTER TO OUR CLIENTS…

Following is a letter to our clients during this time of coronavirus:

Art and I want all of our clients and friends to know we are standing with you during this COVID-19 pandemic. Like you, we are trying to educate ourselves about COVID-19 and its local and global impacts both physically and economically.

We are here to help you with loving support in the postponement and rescheduling of your corporate events, parties and weddings. Like you, we too are suffering immeasurable impacts from COVID-19.

While all of our events operate under signed contracts with our clients, we are taking every measure to honor and accommodate individual changes needed to reschedule dates for the execution of your events within the guidelines of the contract, while applying flexibility wherever possible. Deposits remain non-refundable. We are applying forward all deposits currently paid on your event, towards your future event, rescheduled on dates we are available, within approximately one year of the current event. The exception to the forwarding of deposits will apply where other expenses already paid for your event, need to be deducted from the deposit. Examples of this would be flowers and supplies already purchased or fabricated for the event. Additionally, deposits already made to subcontracted vendors through Fairbanks Florist on your events behalf, are subject to each individual subcontracted vendor contracts and your agreements with Art of the Wedding, LLC DBA Fairbanks Florist for subcontracting these outside vendors on your behalf, for your event. In short, we are here to make this process as flexible, seamless and supportive of you as humanely and professionally possible. Each event will be handled on an event by event basis considering each event and client is unique and precious to us. We are here for you and we ask that you help and support us as we navigate through this extremely stressful and unprecedented time.

Fairbanks Florist will remain accessible to our clients. We are taking appointments via phone or video conferencing. We are still meeting with new clients and keeping positive forward momentum as we believe this is a very temporary situation. Currently flowers are still available, but I will keep you informed should this change. We are here to help with transitioning over to smaller events in the effort to achieve your dreams sooner than later. We are open to thinking out of the box and promise we will take every precautionary measure to ensure the safety of our employees and of course you and your guests, while complying with mandates surrounding COVID19. We are still here to work for you, still here to share our creativity and talents to make your lives as beautiful and joyous as possible.

Above all, we want everyone to remain safe so we can all be together when the time comes to execute our events. Truly our hearts go out to everyone affected by the Coronavirus. 1. Don’t Rule Out Summer in Florida.

If your venue is closing or guests are RSVPing “no” and you need to reschedule, you may think summer in Florida is out. However, you may want to reconsider…

Yes, it’s warm. Yes, it’s humid. But, we can work around that! If you’re willing to think outside the box - to inside, that is.

You may have always had your heart set on an outdoor garden wedding, but don’t discount an indoor celebration.

Consider the following:

- an indoor wedding or event does not have to worry about weather unless it’s serious. Imagine not having to stress over what the radar says for the day. This. Is. Huge.

- planning an outdoor wedding doesn’t necessarily mean it will be held outside. With unpredictable weather no matter what time of year in Florida, there is a chance your outdoor soiree will be rerouted indoors at the last minute - and the lack of planning for an indoor event could dampen your expectations.

- designing an indoor ceremony and reception before the day of gives me and my team, as well as your other vendors, the ability to think creatively and create an environment that goes beyond your wildest dreams. Whether that be floral chandeliers, overflowing trellises of vines and botanicals, or fog filling the dance floor for an oh-so-romantic first dance, we can design a once-in-a-lifetime experience indoors.

- pricing and availability can be better. Changing your date to summer in Florida can mean special pricing and more availability from your venue and vendors (not to mention the abundance of floral selections during this season!). Ask about weekdays and Sundays for potential additional savings.

2. Go Little Now and Big Later.

You may understand why your guests don’t want to travel right now, but that doesn’t mean you may not be sad about it.

However, your wedding can still be romantic AND grand…if you just tweak your vision a bit.

Think about a local elopement - maybe just the two of you or with just your closest family (with social distancing), where you say your vows in the privacy of your own backyard or at a local park or garden away from others.

You can share with friends and family by streaming online, or keep your intimate wedding to yourselves until you plan a big celebration later in the year. Work with your venue and vendors to find a future date when guests may feel comfortable to travel so you can still dine on decadence and dance the night away.

3. Hire a Wedding Planner.

Take the stress off by hiring a wedding planner to handle all the details. Focus on what you need to do right now to stay healthy and allow a professional to handle the changes.

Close your eyes for a moment and feel what it would be like to hand this all over to someone else. Is that relief worth it?

Orchid Opulence: Chris and Nicole’s Wedding Day Splendor

When Nicole and her wedding planner, Tracy Marini of Eventfully Yours, met with Lana their vision was extraordinary. Nicole and Chris were to have a stunning fall wedding at The Alfond Inn overflowing with phalaenopsis orchids that would wow every guest as well as the bride and groom themselves.

And that is exactly what Lana did.

Throughout the design process, Lana took careful note of each detail on their inspiration board, molding each piece to complement the others. And when tweaks needed to be made for alternative blooms and centerpiece ideas, Lana made sure the overall look and feel was never compromised.

The result was something beyond compare.

First, Lana took Nicole’s love of phalaenopsis orchids and created a bouquet that was simply divine. Rather than copy the bouquet in a smaller version for the bridesmaids, Nicole’s bouquet captured the attention and more intimate bouquets of additional wedding floral were held.

The outdoor ceremony boasted a clear chuppah that came from Miami in which Lana exquisitely crafted a bar of lush floral consisting of hydrangea, roses, and of course, the orchids! Later, this constructed piece would be dismantled and redesigned into low reception centerpieces.

Aisle entrance urns were brimming with the same floral scheme and provided a regal entrance.

After the ceremony and cocktail reception, guests retreated to the ballroom where classic, yet romantic high and low centerpieces graced each table around the beautifully draped room.

With accents of gold throughout the entire day and night, the wedding shined as bright as their love.

Simply Peachy! Whitney and Phil’s Dubsdread Summer Wedding

When it came to Whiney and Phil’s wedding at Dubsdread, all we can say is that it was peachy keen!

Not only was the gorgeous coral-peach wedding color scheme and design itself a stunning delight, but the connection with Whitney’s family and Lana was just as special.

Whitney grew up with Lana’s daughter, Jessyca, in which their beautiful friendship has always been treasured in the Faulkner family. Lana designed both Whitney’s and Whitney’s older sister’s wedding - only a few months apart!

And this type of thing isn’t just a coincidence, says Lana.

Repeatedly, Lana experiences this family dynamic phenomenon when siblings or family members get married around the same time…and she even experienced it herself. Lana’s grandmother, mother, sister, and Lana all got married in the same year!

This marvel continues to fascinate Lana and she welcomes all families who experience this, thriving on making each one unique.

For Whitney and Phil’s one-of-a-kind day, she took a peach color scheme and made it flourish with open blooms of peonies and amaryllis, hydrangea and roses, all accented with dusty miller and stock.

Thanks to the seasonality of these flowers, everything from the cascading arrangement on the ceremony tree to the head table masterpieces to Whitney’s bridal bouquet were sensational! We can never get enough of in-season botanicals that come rich with color and breadth.

Bringing such beauty and joy to an already memorable day with such a special family was an honor for Lana and she wishes these soon-to-be-parents the very best!
